Welcome to Dirty Herd Dogs

My Story

I’m Janelle — your “Dirty Herder.”

I am a longtime educator, nonprofit consultant, and writer/editor, happily rooted with my family in the High Peaks, where life is shared closely with dogs, woods, and community.

Dogs have been part of my world for decades. I’ve lived with and learned from rescues, high-energy herders, sensitive souls, and deeply opinionated cuddlers alike.

Along the way, I’ve also had the privilege of learning from trainers, behaviorists, and veterinarians. What continues to guide me is simple: good relationships with dogs are built through presence, patience, and play.

I’m excited to get to know your dog—and your family—just as you are.

My Philosophy

I'm a small, heart-forward canine care and communication practice rooted in the Adirondack region, offering thoughtful support for dogs and the people who love them.

My work centers on three programs: In-home Canine Care, Kids & Dogs Communication sessions, and Preparing for a Dog consultations. Each is designed to support a different stage of the human-dog relationship—from preparing for life with a dog, to living alongside one, to helping children and families build confidence and understanding together.

I'm not a high-volume dog daycare. I'm a low-capacity, relationship-focused practice grounded in communication and gentle engagement.

My Dog

Say hello to Bim

Bim is a full-size Australian Shepherd and truly a Dirty Herd Dog.

He’s playful, intuitive, and respectful of boundaries—if you’re a dog!

He is a superb student, a constant companion, and one of my greatest teachers.

My Commitment

I love all creatures, great and small. I especially love dogs.

I'm devoted to helping our own pups live their best lives, honoring their needs and their natures. Every day with them is a conversation—shared through movement, scent, sound, posture, and play.

I bring this same spirit to every dog I care for. Your pup deserves patience, respect, and curiosity. They deserve people willing to listen. And they’ll always get the best of me, because dogs always give the best of themselves.
